Tanzania is home to over 120 different tribes. One of the joys of traveling is to experience other cultures and traditions. Take the time to visit one of the various tribes and get a sense of the local heritage. The interaction on a personal level will be an extraordinary experience. It is also possible to visit a local market or take a village tour to come into contact with the locals.
The most famous tribe in Tanzania are the proud Masai people. Despite western influences they have managed to hold onto many of their traditions. In the past, they moved nomadically in search of water and pasture for their herds, whereas nowadays they have established permanent settlements. Many of them live within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and coexist with wildlife.
One of the last remaining bushmen tribes are the Hadzabe who live in the dry woodlands of Lake Eyasi. Over the last few decades, they have been pushed deeper into the bush as the try to preserve their unique culture of living in harmony with nature. To this day, they have preserved their tradition of hunting for game with bows and arrows, gathering berries and honey, and digging for roots and tubers.
